About the College

Established in 1974, Hwa Chong Junior College (HCJC) was Singapore’s second junior college, and the first government-aided junior college. As the school building was still under construction when classes began, the students initially attended lessons at National Junior College and then at the NUS Bukit Timah campus.

In June 1974, the staff and students moved into their new school building.

In 1980, HCJC was chosen to be the centre for Oxbridge studies. In 1981, HCJC became the first junior college in Singapore to offer the Humanities programme.

Between June 1987 and December 1991, HCJC moved twice to temporary premises – first to Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Woodlands (June–December 1987), and then to Bukit Batok Street 34 (January 1988–December 1991). The school moved back to its current renovated Bukit Timah campus on 29 December 1991.

HCJC was one of the first junior colleges to offer the Chinese Language Elective Programme (C-LEP), when the course was introduced in 1990.

Since the 1980s, the college has enjoyed a distinguished track record in academia, sports, music, culture and the arts, with many graduates making significant contributions to Singapore's public and private sectors. In 2004, HCJC became the first junior college in Singapore to turn independent.

With the merger with The Chinese High School in January 2005 to facilitate the running of the school’s Integrated Programme, HCJC now forms the College Section of Hwa Chong Institution.

HCJC College Crest

The college crest was represented by four upward arrows bounded by a horizontal bar. These arrows represents the initial streams in the college, namely Arts, Science, Technical and Commerce, as well as the educational aims of social, moral, intellectual and physical growth, together with continued advancement as indicated by the soaring arrows. The horizontal bar that holds the arrows together signifies unity and the withholding of excellence

HCJC College Anthem

The college anthem of HCJC is presently the anthem for the college section of Hwa Chong Institution, sung weekly on Mondays. The anthem, written in English, reflected the ideals of the college as a multiracial environment for holistic learning and growth. A complementary anthem in Chinese was introduced with the English anthem in 1974, adopting the same chord. [Listen to anthem music here]

About the Alumni

The HCJC Alumni was founded in 1985 to foster friendships and maintain robust ties among our graduate students. Through the years, the Hwa Chong tradition we have cultivated, and the different circumstances we overcame together, have helped us grow closer and more cohesive.

Besides supporting the college and student activities, we also support Hwa Chong students who require financial assistance. We believe every student should be given the opportunity to realise their full potential, and have been proactive in organising fundraising events in aid of the HCJC Alumni Bursary Fund.

Objectives of HCJC Alumni

  1. To promote, foster and maintain friendship and goodwill among past Collegians;

  2. To initiate and/or support, by pecuniary or other means, any project which the Alumni deems deserving for its members, the College or the community;

  3. To promote social, cultural, educational and recreational activities.
